Splurge vs. Save: Skincare
Take a look at your bathroom counter. Go ahead, don’t shy away. See all those bottles, sprays and lotions that probably all together cost as much as your first car? Your bathroom clutter may be a sign that you need to do a skincare product purge. Some of your most expensive items are probably less effective than your drugstore finds and vice versa so here’s a little cheat sheet to get you started on knowing what to toss, what to try and what to keep!
Splurge – Serums
Treat yo’self honey! Your skin is your biggest organ and it shows you in the best of light, well hopefully. Whether your skin is a little dull or shines as bright as the sun when the angels sing, we all need one thing: serums. Serums, or treatments, is where the magic begins to happen. Invest in your long-term goals and give your skin what it deserves by spending your hard-earned money on a serum that’s sure to do what it promises.
Why are serums and treatments so awesome? Your skin has pores, we know this, and unlike lotions and other things we slap on our face, serums are made with tiny, teeny molecules that can penetrate your pores so they really work from the inside, out. It’s like the PowerB!tch of skin products.
Save – Cleansers
Buying an expensive cleanser is like watching money flow down your drains. Cleansers really are about 30 seconds of your routine. They mainly exfoliate and remove makeup so you don’t have to put all your pennies in this pot. A cleanser from your drugstore will probably work just as well as more expensive options, and you have a variety of options too! From cooling to exfoliating and more, they’re all within your reach and most likely within your budget.
Tip: Find a cleanser you really enjoy with a rejuvenating scent as a great way to wake up in the morning. What better way to get your shit together than facing the world with a clean face?
Splurge – Creams
Eye creams and face lotions are like your army. Apply it after a serum to protect your skin from life’s elements like the sun, not like the barista who keeps asking you out at your favorite Starbucks…next! Be sure to invest in some hydrating creams because this is the last step in your routine and is the best way to protect your face, so do it wisely!
Save – Toners
Toners should be the second step in your cleansing routine and preps your skin for the real magic (treatments, serums and creams). Since it only prepares your skin (and really cleans off any leftover makeup after using your cleanser), go with an inexpensive toner. Be it rose water or witch hazel, toner readies your skin for the main event.
Save – Masks
With the exception of a very few expensive masks, most masks are all the same in terms of what they are designed to treat. If your mask doesn’t work, save money by not buying ineffective masks and investing instead in a facialist before putting down the big bucks on an at-home mask.
Now that you know where to save and what to splurge on, you’re ready to take on the day with a fresh face! What are your Holy Grail skin care products? Share with your fellow ladies and stay tuned for more in the Splurge vs. Save series!
