Quick Kitchen Check
Carrie Bradshaw uses her oven to store sweaters. We all know this. But, the girl still has an oven and that’s an important must-have in a kitchen if she decides to give up shoe shopping and writing to be the next Rachel Ray. From using only your microwave to knowing exactly how hot to get your Dutch oven, us girls vary on a wide spectrum of chef to hot pocket. Whether you’re a Carrie Bradshaw or the next Food Network star, there are some things every girl needs in her kitchen (and some you don’t) aside from plates and silverware that’ll get you by, keep you nourished so you can be the confident PowerB!tch you are (no one likes a hangry PowerB!tch) and help you look like you got your shit together when you have friends and family visiting.
Your chic kitchen needs a few things for you to get by, and you do it stylishly. Head to the store or rummage through your parents’ kitchen and “borrow” a few things as you start to get your kitchen into tip-top shape:
- Utensils like…
High-quality measuring spoons and cups, a rubber spatula, spring-loaded tongs, vegetable peeler, rolling pin, whisk, colander, nested bowls, knives (chef’s knife, bread knife, paring knife) and a cutting board. Whatever you do, don’t leave the store (or your parent’s house) without a can opener! It’s the worst situation when you need to open a can of beans…and realize you can’t. #firstworldproblems
- Pots and Pans
Metals sheet trays, non-stick frying pans and pots of varying sizes. You know, one for spaghetti, one for rice, one fit for a few eggs etc. Also don’t eat soggy noodles…buy a strainer.
Nonstick skillets are great tools for newbies but remember never to use metal utensils on nonstick pans. Firstly, the sound…just no. Secondly, when you scratch a non-stick pan it can release chemicals that you don’t want in your body.
I think it’s safe to say that bakeware fits under pots and pans. If you love pizza, get a pizza pan and an 8-inch square glass baking dish is essential for midnight cake mix runs in your PJs. Don’t deny it, you know you’ve done it.
- Casserole Dish
For when you want to be fancy and cook a casserole. Actually, a casserole dish made of glass is perfect for much of anything. You can use it to simply serve a meal, organize a taco bar all in one dish, and carry cupcakes to and fro and more. Actually, this might be your best kitchen friend.
- A Grater
Believe me this thing will come in handy more than you know. It does more than just grate cheese. Look for a grater that has four sides and a handle on top (each side should grate different sizes). Use it to grate cheese for a quick mac and cheese or to grate zucchini or other squashes for a quick “pasta” like meal. The smaller holes? Grate orange to garnish your chocolate mousse with some zest #girlyoufancy.
Spices can be expensive but a starter kit with a few essential ones is a great way to literally add flavor to your dish.
Where were we before Tupperware? What did we put leftovers in? You can save SO much money by saving your food in Tupperware or even storing things in cabinets as a way to organize your drawers.
- Slow Cooker
If you’re a working women or are just crazy busy, then girl, say hello to the slow cooker. Throw a bunch of your favorite things into it with some water or broth before school or work and by the time you get home, it’s ready to eat!
Those morning smoothies aren’t going to make themselves!
- Oven Mitts
It’s no fun eating that midnight cake mix cake with burnt hands. Invest in some fun oven mitts and protect those hands. #allthecake.
- A Bottle Opener
I’m sure there are a million ways to use a bottle opener but you know you’ll need it for its intended purpose at some point.
Not So Much
You probably don’t need…an electric hand mixer. I mean, why miss out on an awesome workout with the reward of food after?
A cake stand because you know it won’t make it to the stand before it’s devoured by your room mates, friends and family.
A bread maker, because really who has the time?
A juicer. I know, it’s heresy but here me out. What can a juicer do that your versatile, handy dandy blender can’t?
Grilled cheese maker or Panini press. You don’t need this. You have a pan and a spatula. Press hard girlfriend.
What are your go-to kitchen gadgets or utensils? Is there something you absolutely couldn’t live without?
