Organize to Avoid Organizing
Ever woken up the morning after spring cleaning, reorganizing and getting rid of the clutter in and around your bed? Ever realized it was all in your head? I did. Biggest dream let down EVER! *Starts scrubbing floors singing from Annie*.
I’m not ashamed to stay that my state of affairs can really mess up everything from my mood, my sense of empowerment and even work ethic. But, be it stuff on the floor, stuff on the couch, stuff on the fridge door or even stuff on OUCHHHHHHHH
Fuck, I just stepped on stuff trying to be a little like Dr. Seuss. You get my point though. Between school, spin classes, work and going out with friends, it’s so easy for our rooms to look like we seriously need to get our shit together (or maybe a conveniently small earthquake? “omgah, mom! Look what the earth quake did to my room!!). The best part is, you can go on with your life every day and avoid reaching the point of a pigsty with one simple trick: organize. Yeah, it sounds like an obvious solution but organizing is your template to keep your room clean forever. Pinky promise. Let’s get started!
A Home for Everything
Get ready to fall in love with your label maker. The first step is to toss everything into the middle of your room, then sort everything into categories: clothes, shoes, office papers and random shit (yeah, that’s miscellaneous). Make your labels fun so it doesn’t look like a classroom and make it easy to understand. For example, you don’t have to label clothes like, white string bikini with polka dots. Instead of getting super specific, start with the general stuff and then get to the nitty gritty.
Sort your clothes by type (tanks, coats, etc.) then by color (white to black or rainbow). Doing this makes it SO easy to put together a PowerB!tch outfit in no time because you’ll see everything laid out. Need a black skirt? No problem. Everything has its place so putting clean clothes away it as easy as finding a hanger and putting it back where it came from. No more nasty piles of clothes on the floor!
Start with height, then color. Store boots together and if you have chip bag clips or pool noodles, you can use them to hold your boots together and fill the empty space so they can keep their form. Lifehack for the win, much?
Office Papers or Schoolwork
Get ready to be a planner addict. Grab some fun folders and binders. The second a paper comes your way, file that bad boy! Keeping everything together means you’ll find it without having to waste time looking for it. Need to find your last paystub? It better be in your paystubs binder! Keeping glam accessories nearby never hurts either.
Random Stuff & Memorabilia
It’s hard to let go of that birthday card we got from our crush in the second grade. It’s even harder to throw away something you made in art class that looks like absolutely nothing…or a timeless piece of work…I mean, who knows what it could be worth years from now? I feel ya. But keeping these things could quickly land us on Hoarders, so let’s dial it in and bag it, label it or box it and keep it safe for the next time you need to reminisce.
All in all, you don’t need to throw everything away, but give it a spot and be diligent about maintaining the order. Spending a few minutes a day tidying up can save you days in the long run so get to it, before you know it you’ll end up somewhere between Hoarders and Monk (but hopefully more on the Monk side)
And you find about 1,000,000,000,007 more tips and tricks that can help you get & keep your sh!t together and streamlined.
