MTV’s Ashley Rickards Reveals Her Most “Awkward” Style Moments
Like her character on MTV’s high-school comedy “Awkward” (back for its fifth season later this year), Ashley Rickards has gone through plenty of ups and downs. But these days, she’s doing pretty well—and wants to share her secrets to success! Enter her new book, A Real Guide to Really Getting it Together Once and For All (Really). Part memoir, part self-help, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are already fans and it’s no wonder: it features expert tips and covers everything you need to know to feel great on the inside and out, from positive-thinking tools to fashion, beauty and fitness advice.
To give you a sneak peek, we chatted with Rickards about her most awkward moments—and how she’s really gotten it together once and for all (really) since!
1. Her most awkward fashion moment: “My most awkward fashion moment is probably something every woman experiences, where you change a size and you’re still trying to fit into your old jeans. And they don’t look as good, but there’s just something inside of you that makes you want to wear that smaller size. The problem is, when you’re on a show and people have to dress you every day, you have to tell somebody you’ve gone up a size! I’m in recovery for an eating disorder and was very self-conscious about it.”
How she got it together after that: “We chose some character-appropriate clothes that made me comfortable and pulled me out of my body so I could give the best performance. And I stopped putting myself through the torture of staying in smaller clothes that weren’t flattering. You know, I have a butt and I don’t know what’s wrong with these designers but they design these jeans that look like Spanx on your butt. And I like my butt! Honestly, I think H&M and Topshop make the most awesome jeans. They’ve got some mid-rise ones with a forgiving waistband that are very flattering on me. They’re perfect!”
2. Her most awkward beauty moment: “I’ll give you the Cliff Notes because it’s a story in my book, too, but I had bad lighting in this place I was putting on makeup and I was very nervous because I was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award. I put on so much makeup that I looked crazy! I wore far too much eye concealer, and I don’t even know how far out I drew those lips—it’s as if I were like, ‘You know what’s a good look, actually? Candy lips. Let’s put those on.'”
How she got it together after that: “I learned to do my makeup better through trial and error, and I learned to accept myself and not try to change myself into something I wasn’t. I’m really good at my own makeup now, and I try to keep it as natural as possible. I like to play up my eyes—I’m all about Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in Black.”
3. Her most awkward fitness moment: “Well, I kickbox. To me, it’s like an anger-management relief. One time, I was really into it mentally, and accidentally punched my trainer! He didn’t block himself fast enough, and it was pretty awkward.”
How she got it together after that: “He was fine, and we laughed it off! I still do kickboxing, but now I do Bikram yoga, too. I can’t even describe it; it’s just an incredible experience. It’s challenging for your body, but the most prevalent thing for me is the balance. It’s a very, very fun experience.”
