MTV’s hit show Awkward stars Ashley Rickards as Jenna Hamilton, a teenage girl who warily navigates the cruel, gossipy, and often, umm—awkward!—waters known as high school. As the series wraps up filming its fifth and final season, audiences have witnessed Jenna come into her own and work through some major drama with the perfect amount of verve and sass. It should be no surprise that Ashley has walked away from her character’s experience having worked through some stuff in her own life.
“I found myself at a point in life where I felt like I really had it together and I wanted to inspire my fans to do the same,” shares the 22-year-old actress. “I tried all the ‘five-minute makeover’ tricks out there, but none of them worked because they never started with my core. That’s where self-love and acceptance starts.”
After a brief stint battling an eating disorder, as well as an experience with bullying, Ashley developed her own system for keeping her head on straight. Dissatisfied with the self-help available to young people today, she set out to share her secrets of happiness on an effective, accessible, and intimate level. “It’s so simple to get what you want in life, but so hard learning to love yourself enough to do it,” she says.
With her career on track and a healthy balanced personal life, Ashley penned A Real Guide to Really Getting It Together Once and for All (Really), a step-by-step guide for people of all ages who want to be the best version of themselves. Unlike other motivational texts that drill positive mantras into the ground with no real life examples, Ashley begins each chapter with a personal essay as a jumping-off point. With topics like careers, finance, spirituality, beauty, relationships, fitness, and fashion, the guide is brimming with personal examples that readers can compare with their own experiences.
The book’s advice isn’t solely from the MTV star. Ashley carefully selected a field expert to help drive each chapter home. With impressive names like Deepak Chopra (who waxes poetic about discovering your inner self) to Nicole Leal (who schools you on hair), this book highlights firsthand quotes from top industry professionals, ensuring you receive the most bang for your buck. Speaking of buck, the book is priced under $20!
“You have to put a lot of work into the book if you want positive results,” Ashley confesses of the interactive guide. With a format similar to a textbook, the literature asks readers to take part in some hard-hitting questions with complete honesty. “You can’t be your best self if you’re lying about who you are. My book is a customizable guide to finding the truest version of you. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it.”
With adorable illustrations by Becky Murphy strewn throughout, this is one textbook you’ll actually want to study. The one thing Ashley hopes her readers to take away from her new book? “That they’re enough just as they are! They’re perfect and whatever they want in life they can have,” she says. “They just need to work for it.”
